We are aware of the fact that increasing our consumption of fruits and vegetables in our diet can lead to many health benefits. These include better heart health, better digestion, increased immunity and an improvement in our vision health. However, did you know that increasing your consumption of fruits in your diet on a daily basis can actually stave off or even reduce your risks for the eye disease diabetic retinopathy? Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye disease that is associated with damage to the blood vessels of the eyes that can lead to vision loss. Including fruits in your diet can also help you to keep blood sugar levels in a healthy range; a factor that is vital in reducing your risks for the eye disease Diabetic Retinopathy. Therefore, here is some research information that supports this argument:

A research study conducted by Shiro Tanaka of Kyoto University Hospital studied 978 test subjects who were diagnosed with Diabetes. These test subjects in this study were given questioners that they were asked to fill out regarding their dietary habits. They were monitored for a period of eight years and for the course of the duration of this study, they were given annual eye exams. At the beginning of the study none of the participants showed any signs of eye diseases. However, 8 years later 258 of the participants in that particular study developed the eye disease Diabetic Retinopathy. This particular group did not consume fruits in their diet. However, those participants in the study who ate at least 9 ounces of fruit a day actually showed a 50% reduction in their risks for Diabetic Retinopathy over that 8 year period of time. Therefore, this study shows that there is a link between a consumption of fruits in your diet and a reduced risk for Diabetic Retinopathy.

One of the things that this study shows is that paying attention to your diet is essential in reducing your risks not just for eye diseases in general, but also eye diseases associated with high blood sugar problems related to Diabetes.

Often, we tend to take for granted the importance of paying attention to our sugar consumption. This is due to the fact that for reasons related to taste preference, we have an emotional connection to sweets. Foods that are loaded with sugar taste good and are considered comfort foods for a lot of people. While cutting back on your sugar consumption is not an easy thing to do especially if you happen to have a sweet tooth, we can make a concerted effort to practice moderation and limit our sugar consumption. This is due to the fact that excessive sugar consumption can have a negative effect on the eyes. Excessive sugar intake damages the blood vessels in the retina at the back of the eye and also causes the eye lens to swell up. According to the American Optometric Association it can lead to eye diseases such as diabetic Retinopathy, macular degeneration and cataracts; eye diseases that are some of the leading causes of blindness in the United States.

Therefore, when it comes to maintaining healthy eyesight it is important to pay careful attention to your diet. This can be accomplished by lowering your sugar consumption and increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables in your diet. By doing this you' ll be doing the necessary things that you need to do to protect your vision health and reduce your risks for eye diseases like macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.
